A guide to the world’s most unique swimming pools – the largest, most expensive, most famous, most luxurious, and some of the most interesting pools in the world!
Largest Outdoor Swimming Pools
The world record-holder for the largest outdoor swimming pool in The Guinness World Records is a man-made saltwater lagoon at San Alfonso del Mar Resort at Algarrabo on Chile’s Southern Coast. The Crystal Lagoons Corporation engineered this pool that spans more than 1,000 yards in length, covers 20 acres of land, is over 115 feet deep at its deepest point and holds 66 million gallons of water!
The second largest outdoor swimming pool in the world is another saltwater lagoon, engineered by the same Crystal Lagoons Corporation, at Playa Blanca Resort, Residences and Hotel on Panama’s Pacific Coast. The pool at Playa Blanca is surrounded by white sand and holds over 600,000 gallons of water spanning across 17 acres. The pool offers extensive activities, including sailing, kayaking, diving and snorkeling, among others.
Largest Indoor Swimming Pools
World Waterpark, located in the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta, Canada, is home to the largest indoor wave pool in North America. The indoor water park extends across 5 acres and features year-round tropical temperatures. The water park features miles of water slides, over 20 different activities, including bungee jumping, and recently opened the world’s largest indoor interactive attraction: Caribbean Cove.
The Neutral Buoyancy Lab, located in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Sonny Carter Training Facility, Houston, Texas is the largest indoor pool. The pool is used as a training operation for astronauts to simulate zero-gravity, or the weightless condition experienced by spacecraft and crew during space flight.
Deepest Swimming Pool
Nemo 33 is a recreational diving center in Brussels, Belgium that is home to the world’s deepest swimming pool. The pool is over 33 meters deep and is heated to 33 degrees Celsius. The pool is filled with 2,500,000 gallons of non-chlorinated, highly filtered spring water and features several simulated underwater platforms and caves.
Most Famous Swimming Pool
The most famous, arguably the most luxurious, and not to mention most photographed, swimming pools in the world are the Hearst Mansion swimming pools. The mansion, constructed on 250,000 acres of land, contains 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, 127 acres of garden, both indoor and outdoor extravagant swimming pools and the world’s largest private zoo.
Interesting Pools
The Four Seasons Resort in Bali features a pool overlooking the jungle, over 50 feet off the ground! To get to the pool, you cross a wooden bridge surrounded by breath-taking flora and fauna and hear tranquil sounds of the river that runs throughout the property.
Possibly the most interesting and precarious pool in the world is a natural body of water known as “Devil’s Pool” on the edge of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Africa. The
natural rock pool, located at the very top of Victoria Falls, at certain times of the year, allows adventurous swimmers to safely splash around just a few feet away from where the water cascades over the waterfall and plunges over 100 meters to the gorge below!

Is the pool at Playa Blanca resort finished? We will be staying there in March 2009 and have heard that it is not complete.

@Sandy Thank you for checking out our blog! The lagoon, which will be the second largest swimming pool in the world, is currently under construction. The specific elements of this phase of development are set to be delivered throughout this year. If the lagoon is not complete by your arrival date, there are other swimming pools at the Resort in working order. Thanks again for reading!

Hi,
The trend towards an open economy and possible trade pacts with such nations as the U.S. and Mexico are conducive to investment in Panama. There are also no government expropriation or interference as in many Latin American countries. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks
Sofia.
